Week 5 - 1698.

William of Orange was on the throne in England. He had a rather excellent nose (I may have exaggerated it a bit in my drawing...).

Bit late with this one due to Stuff. Week 6 due on Monday.

Several projects on the go at the moment, one of which is a collaborative box set of prints between Cowprint members and a group of printmakers in the Falkland Islands. My image is in progress.

There were some good things in this exhibition but overall, a bit disappointing. Not enough variety of work, not enough history etc. The film of Chinese students drawing a huge head of David was good, as were some of the 19th Century paintings of life classes at the RA. Amusing in a Giles cartoon sort of way; some of the students didn't seem to be paying attention or looked decidedly bored. Also wearing hats indoors. You have to feel for the models who must have been pretty cold.

Worked on an etching plate (soft ground) last week, this time graphite stick on newsprint, but for some reason, it didn't etch very well. Hmm. I have theories. Back to the drawing board.

Weekly drawing challenge

A friend of mine decided I needed a drawing challenge so every Monday she gives me a new topic. We're only on week 3 so far; here are weeks 1 and 2.

Week 1 - a clock.
Week 2 - more than one musical instrument.

I'm keeping them small and trying to do them fairly quickly as a way of being more disciplined.

A new year of life drawing

Had a day of life drawing on Saturday and our Tuesday evening sessions started up again this week so drawing for 2018 is off to a good start. A friend has decided to set me a weekly drawing challenge too so news of that coming soon.

New stuff

Started a couple of new activities this year. I joined a book club to try and get myself reading again and yoga classes to help deal with the aches and pains of middle age. The latter may well appear in prints at some point.

Ailing press

I have been really rubbish about posting this year. Didn't get round to building a crate for my press and shipping it North until October so finally got it back mid-December. Goes without saying that I'm very pleased to have it back. Five months with no press meant pretty much five months without any printmaking - or creative stuff at all in fact. Dreadful!

I need to make up for lost time. So, here's what I've done in the last couple of weeks. This is a small etching for a forthcoming print exchange / box set. Watch out for more about Wolus and Nile University for Esoterica and Woo.

A day of exprimenting

It's been a slow summer creatively for a whole raft of reasons. Did get some monoprinting done whilst covering the workshop one day last month though. Unusually, I had no plan before I went, other than monoprinting with stencils. This is what happened. 

Inking up some lace, feathers and string reminded me of dancing figures. I then started thinking about a book I'd read recently, Georgina Harding's Painter of Silence, in which one of the characters makes rather abstract faceless characters from cardboard and winds cloth and string around them. Add PBs estate agents into the mix with a side order of Drownies from Fallen London and this is what came out. A fun and productive day working very freely and spontaneously.
